CAPA held its summer dance camp for the second summer and saw growth double from summer 2023! Twenty-five students participated in the 7 week day camp held at the Contemporary Dance Theater is College Hill. Camp ran Monday through Thursday, 9am-2pm and provided free lunch to the students. Students worked on all types of dance genres from contemporary to ballet to tap ....and of course, Afro-Caribbean inspired ballet that is the speciality of lead teacher Flora Leptak-Moreua, of Ballet Caraibes Dance Studio. Students participated in Northside's traditional July 4th parade - and were featured in the Cincinnati Enquirer! Camp culminated with a dance recital for family and friends on July 19. The camp is free to students and a highlight of their summer - said one parent "My daughter just loves coming to this camp, she can't wait to continue dance class in the fall". CAPA also offers free after school dance classes at Chase Elementary during the school year and many of the students in the camp are from Chase Elementary. "You gave my daughter a summer!" This is what one parent said at the end of CAPA's newest dance outreach program, CAPA Ballet Caraibe DanceCare (CBC). The dance camp was held in lower Price Hill every afternoon in June & full days July, 9am to 3:30pm. Students learned ballet fundamentals, Afro-Caribbean dances, contemporary, and modern dance from experienced dance teacher, Flora Leptak-Moreau of Ballet Caraibe Dance Studio. Free lunches and snacks were provided everyday through collaboration with Our Daily Bread and La Soupe. This program was completely free to students thanks to our sponsors Duke Energy Foundation and The Knowlton Foundation. We are working on funding camp for next year and hope to bring back this opportunity for students to "have a summer!" |
